Concussion Policy

Rider safety is non-negotiable. If a head knock happens, we follow this policy β€” no exceptions.

If in doubt, sit them out.

Any rider with a possible concussion must stop immediately. No return that day.

What is concussion?

A concussion is a brain injury caused by a knock to the head or body. A rider does not need to be knocked out for it to be a concussion β€” symptoms can appear hours or even days later.

Signs to look for

  • Headache
  • Dizziness or balance problems
  • Feeling sick or being sick
  • Confusion or slow thinking
  • Blurred vision
  • Acting differently

Symptoms may appear later β€” keep watching the rider for 24–48 hours.

What will happen at the track

  • Rider is removed from the track immediately
  • Medical advice is sought β€” NHS 111, GP, or A&E if serious
  • Parent or guardian is informed
  • An incident form is completed by the club
  • No same-day return to riding under any circumstances

Early recovery

  • Rest for 24–48 hours β€” both body and brain
  • Return to normal daily activity (school first) before any sport
  • No riding while symptoms remain
  • If symptoms return, seek medical advice immediately.

Return-to-riding pathway

The rider must follow each stage in order. No return to riding within 14 days will be accepted by the club.

  1. 1Rest

No sport while symptoms are present.

  2. 2Normal Life

Back to school and normal daily activity.

  3. 314 Days Symptom Free

Rider must be completely symptom-free for 14 days.

  4. 4Light Training

Easy riding only. No gates, no racing, no contact.

  5. 5Full Training

    Normal BMX training sessions.

  6. 6Racing

    Return to competition.

Final decision

The Club Welfare Officers have the final say on a rider's return to riding and racing. This is not negotiable, and it is made in the rider's long-term interest.

Important

  • Always report head knocks β€” to a coach, official, or the Welfare Officer
  • Do not ignore or hide symptoms
  • Follow the return-to-riding pathway fully

Any rider with a suspected concussion will not be allowed to ride until this process is completed.
