Our Story
Club History
From the first shovelful of dirt at Brackendene to a thriving, British Cyclingβaffiliated club β here's where Runnymede Rockets came from.
Founding
How it all started
Runnymede Rockets BMX Club was founded by a group of riders, parents and volunteers wanting a home track for BMX racing in the Surrey area. Built at Brackendene Open Space in Addlestone, the track has been the heart of the club from day one.
Early years
Building the track
Volunteers shaped the dirt, poured the start hill and laid the rhythm section by hand. The first races were small affairs β local kids, a stopwatch, and a finishing flag. Word spread, the racing got serious, and the club grew.
Going national
British Cycling affiliation
Affiliation with British Cycling brought structure: qualified coaches, safeguarding, insurance, and access to the national race calendar. Rockets riders started travelling to regional and national rounds, bringing back trophies and stories.
Today
A volunteer-run club for every age
The club runs weekly coaching for all ages and abilities, gates training, club races, and a packed social calendar. Everything is run by volunteers β coaches, committee, parents β who give their time so the next generation of riders gets the same chance to ride, race and grow.
The people who built the club have their own page.
